Introduction to Viterbi CampusPress
Campus Press, usually referred to as Sites.usc.edu, is provided by USC ITS and Viterbi MarCom helps to administer the system for Viterbi folks.
The system provides an easy and free way to setup a website for professional / USC purposes and requires no coding. Everything is done through a visual / click interface.
It is available to all USC faculty and staff.
The system is based on Campus Press and is a popular way for our faculty or staff to set up small, static content sites up for centers, research groups, initiatives, events or personal faculty sites. Campus Press (CP) and is based on the popular cms platform Word Press. To create a site on CP is free for faculty and staff.
Please be aware that this is only for basic sites. No custom code or data calls to other systems can be inserted, no additional plugins installed, no payment can be collected and it’s limited to the templates provided. The default template for all Campus Press site requests is “Cardinal”. While ITS had provided multiple themes to choose from in the past, they are currently asking for all new sites to start with “Cardinal”, as this is the only theme that is fully WCAG/ADA compliant.
Please visit https://sites.usc.edu/ for more detailed information about the process, choices, and tutorials.
Example sites built with the Cardinal Theme:
https://festivalofbooks.usc.edu/
https://pacificasiamuseum.usc.edu/
If you want to proceed with a Campus Press site for your project, please contact Andreas Tillmann and his team will request the site from USC ITS for you, once you provide a little info about your site such as full lab / program / initiative etc. name, type of content presented, purpose of website, etc.
After USC ITS sets up the new site for you, you oversee building out the site (creating pages, filling them with content, etc). When you reached a point with the site built out so that it’s ready to share publicly, Viterbi MarCom will help with the launch process.
The standard url for all the new CP sites is “sites.usc.edu/xyz”. Please provide what you want the “xyz” part to be.
If a custom USC url like xyz.usc.edu, is desired, the requesting faculty or staff member will need to request a DNS alias directly from USC ITS once the campus press site is launched under its standard url. https://itservices.usc.edu/how-to-request-a-usc-url/
